The Washington Monument

We took our monthly trip up to Washington D.C. to attend the temple on Saturday August 21st. We try to do something fun for the kids when we go up there either before or after we go to the temple. We (motivated by Michael) had wanted to go up to the top of the Washington Monument ever since we moved out East. The tickets are free, however you have to arrive at the "crack of dawn" to get tickets (which is difficult when you live 2 hours away). We had tried to get up there early enough to get tickets a few times without success. We finally figured out that you could reserve tickets online for a fee of $1.50 -- we decided to splurge!

It was a great experience. First of all we got a parking spot right across the street -- that may have been my favorite part! After passing through security, we waited a few minutes for our turn to go up the elevator.

The Washington Monument is the world's tallest obelisk standing at 555 feet 5 1/8 inches. When we got up to the top we got to look out the windows on all four sides. The views were amazing. Here is the kids looking out over the National Mall.

And looking out to the White House.

It was a really cool experience -- I think we will definitely do it again.

It makes me nervous just to look out the window. However, great views, your kids are brave.
