Utah #1 -- Getting There . . .

I have determined that I will have to blog about our trip to Utah in installments. We just had so much fun and took WAY too many pictures (about 800 between me, Barbie, Andrew, Shannon, and iphones). So, it has taken me quite a bit of time to sift through them. But, without further adieu, here is installment #1.

We got in the car to drive to the airport as soon as the kids got off of the bus on Wednesday afternoon. They missed Thursday and Friday (the last two days of school). We drove to Newport News Airport, parked in long term parking and shuttled the six of us and our two checked bags, a stroller, five carry-ons, and one diaper bag to the Delta counter. We checked in and proceeded to the gate. We boarded the plane. Sat down and waited and waited. Apparently there was some bad weather in Atlanta, GA (through which we were connecting) that had temporarily closed the airport. Luckily we had chatted with the pilot while we were waiting at the gate and he came back and got our kids to go see the cockpit.

They got to push buttons and play with the steering wheel, do safety checks and they even got a set of wings to pin on their shirts. It was a great way to kill some time. Finally Atlanta opened up and we took-off (about 45 minutes late).

To make a long story short . . . we got to Atlanta and they had closed the airport again. So, we circled in the air until we finally had to fly to Birmingham, AL to refuel. We sat on the ground in Alabama for about an hour (mind you we haven't been off of our plane for about six hours). Then they announced that Atlanta was once again reopened and so we took-off once again for Atlanta. This time they let us land. It was about 2am, we had missed our connection and the next flight to SLC was at 8:15am. So, we found a little spot of ground/chair/table for the night.

It is too bad I couldn't get a picture of me sleeping on the floor with my 9 month old baby wrapped in my arms. It was a restless night, to say the least. We were up early grabbed some airport food for breakfast and got onto the plane to SLC. After that, things went smoothly. We landed around 10am (about 16 hours after leaving home).

Dazed and deliriously happy to be on familiar ground we let the kids run in the sprinklers and enjoy the first day in Utah.
