Veggie Derby

Michael brought a paper home from school recently informing us that their class was going to compete in a Veggie Derby. A competition where you make a vehicle out of fruits and vegetables. (There were a few other rules specifying number of veggies/fruits and other items that could be used, like toothpicks and skewers). So we decided have a mock derby at our house. We each made a car trying out various techniques and gathering info for Michael. It was pretty fun.

Sarah was determined to make the "cutest LITTLE" car. She didn't really care if it moved or not.

On Your Marks . . . Get Set . . . Go!

I had to be at the bottom of the driveway to take the picture, so I couldn't start my car. They tell me that they pushed if for me . . . but I wonder if they really did . . . it should have gone much further. Right?

Michael actually had the best design. He tweaked it and practiced building it a few times before the derby at school. They had to bring their uncut and unmarked veggies that morning and build it themselves (with volunteer parents to cut veggies).

Here he is recording his results. He came in 4th! He was pretty excited.

(I just noticed he wore the same shirt for our Family Derby and the School Derby. Maybe it is his lucky shirt . . . maybe that's why he was doing so well?)

FUN! we've done something similar at institute/ward activities using only potatoes and the toothpicks/skewers too of course. You should see the elders quorum get into it! And we may have cheated for the wheels. We used washers which made it significantly easier. Then we raced our potato derby cars down the pinewood derby tracks.
