So, back in February we decided that we wanted to plant a real garden. We chose a spot in our backyard that gets lots of sun and started to prepare it. We had to chop down an evergreen. Which the kids loved.

We also chose a second spot in the backyard to do an herb garden. As we were weeding, and weeding we discovered that we already had garlic growing. We are so excited to see what will become of it (I think we are suppose to harvest it in August).

Then in April, Ben's parents came to visit, we went to the garden store and bought our seeds and planted them. We were lucky to have Grandma Tammy be there to help us. She made it so much fun for the kids. She also saved our garden from the rabbits that live in our neighborhood by purchasing "dried blood" to sprinkle around our plants. Thanks Grandma!!!

We also bought some herb plants and potted them.

Then we discovered that we also had chives growing in our yard. We weeded around them and rescued them too. Actually, it did take some research to find out what they were. We had to google them in order to see what the young plant looked like (I really felt like a detective).

Well, then we watered and waited. The kids were really excited when it would rain (which it does here a lot), because they knew that would help our garden grow. Ben's new ritual became: 1) walking in the door from work, 2) kiss me and the kids, 3)head out to check on the progress of the garden. He really has done most of the work. He weeded a ton, planted and transplanted. Then, in the first week of June, we harvested our first items. We got a green pepper, which we sliced up and ate raw . . . the kids loved it (there was even an argument over the last slice).

We also got a zucchini.

We made a wonderful dinner with it. We had to use store-bought tomatoes because our tomatoes will not be ready for a while. But, it was still SO good.

Today we picked another zucchini (which I have been told must be reserved for zucchini bread), and two cucumbers (which we put in a salad for dinner). It has been so fun to see the results from our (actually Ben's) hard work.

Your garden looks awesome and so does the dish you made out of your fresh veggies. Very impressive!
Your' garden looks like a TON of FUN!!! You have the cutest little family ever!
P.S. What is the dinner you have the picture of? It looks absolutely delightful!
That is so fun. We are loving our garden as well. Next year you have to try lettuce and spinach. The plants just grow and grow and whenever you want a salad you just snip some off. Peas are going like hot cakes around here. I have only had a few because Thomas is so cute begging them off of me.
Very nice indeed. I got started a little late on our resemblance of our garden. Your soil looks really good and I can't believe how many herbs and plants were already growing that you rescued. Impressive. We have a garden box and hope to get some cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, and maybe some watermelon if we're lucky. I'll be happy if we get half of those! That dish looked really yummy too.
