We started early in the week on Michael's car. Ben and Michael did a lot of sketching and discussion in the planning stages. We all went out in the garage with our coats on and cut and sanded. Then Emma said, "Where's my car." The next day Ben brought her one home. I sat down with Emma for about 20 minutes discussing what she would like her car to look like and possible ways to cut and shape it. She ultimately decided that she didn't want to cut hers at all, because then she wouldn't have enough room to paint all the flowers that she wanted on it . . . fair enough. Painting definatley was her favorite part.
Michael (always the perfectionist) decided that it was too hard to paint the flames on the side of his car, so he enlisted Mom to do it for him. I held the paintbrush, but was given specific instructions/sketches and closely supervised. He actually took this photo as he was monitoring my progress.
So, off to the races. There was an enormous turnout. The were holding races from 4:30p until about 7:00p. Michael was very excited and soaked the event in.
Michael and Emma both really liked to see their cars race numerous times. Michael came in Fourth overall and Emma was not too far behind.
After all of the official races the kids took over the track and races their cars over and over again. I think this was Michael's favorite part of the night. He loved hanging with the older boys and racing HIS car.
Before we left he was already discussing his design for next year.

That is fragging cute! It looks like a lot of fun.
I want you to know that your kid's escapades at this pinewood derby caused me to have to listen for twenty minutes while Andrew and Gene were arguing about the physics of a pinewood derby car. Good thing Michael and Emma had fun, or it wouldn't have been worth it.
I love it! I seriously appreciate the pink flowery car because I know that our little ones would do the same. Your kids are darling and we miss you.
